Seasons of My
Childhood
Through winter, spring,
summer, and fall,
I remember a grand
magnolia tree standing firm and tall.
A coat of bark protected
it from winter’s cold.
In the spring, a new green
wardrobe would unfold.
It provided a shady
shelter on a hot summer's day,
and in the fall, it gaily
shed leaves wonderful for play.
Because of strong roots
planted firmly in the ground,
that magnolia tree was
able to thrive as the seasons turned round.
Through winter, spring,
summer, and fall,
I remember you, Daddy,
standing firm and tall.
You worked to keep your
family clothed and fed.
With love, you provided
for the home of which you were head.
I remember you coming home
in the evenings after a long day,
sitting with us and
laughing, as we clapped and sang at play.
Because of these things, I
know that you loved your family.
I just wanted you to know,
Daddy, that you are loved by me.
