The Heirloom

Protect this family heirloom I pass onto you my son.

I am afraid it is irreplaceable; I can only give you one.

It was given to me by my father many years ago,

coupled with a lesson he said every son should know.

"Guard it with your life my boy," I heard him say.

I can still see the pride in his eyes as if it were yesterday.

"This is a one time gift, for I only possess one to give.

So I expect you to care for it properly as long as you live.

When the morning sun rises, take it with you each day.

Never conceal it in shame, keep it proudly on constant display.

When others inquire, speak of it with dignity and pride.

I give it to you honorably, you have nothing to hide.

Some day, when age marks my face, and you have grown,

God may see fit to bless you with a son of your own.

Then, if He does, you will have this heirloom to pass on to him.

Just make sure it still sparkles untarnished, like a gem."

Son, what my father asked of me, I now ask of you the same.

Many things can be replaced, but I can only give you one name.

Y
