A rugged cross once stood
on the hill of Calvary,
and became the original
Christmas tree.
With a garland of flesh,
it was strung,
and a solitary ornament
from it was hung.
It was adorned with
rusted, piercing nails,
and tinseled with blood,
so the Bible tells.
It was watered daily with
mourners’ tears,
and celebrated with carols
of taunting jeers.
Illuminated with the Son's
holy light,
and topped with a thorny
crown mocking His plight.
It bore a gift wrapped in
unconditional love.
Mercy offered to all,
compassion there is no end of.
No greater gift will there
ever be,
than the one borne by the
original Christmas tree.
